USBC WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS FAST FACTS

  • The 2011 Women’s Championships will be conducted from April 7 through July 2, spanning 100 days.
  • The Women’s Championships is the world’s largest participatory sporting event for women. This year’s event will attract more than 30,000 participants.
  • The first Women’s Championships was held in 1916 in St. Louis with 40 bowlers and eight teams competing for a $225 prize fund.
  • The estimated prize fund for 2011 is expected to approach $2 million.
  • Syracuse is the 57th city to host the Women’s Championships. The tournament has visited 29 states.
  • The arena setting is constructed completely from scratch. The amount of lumber used is enough to construct at least five three-bedroom homes, and more than six miles of wiring is required to handle the tournament’s electrical needs.
  • The materials used to construct the venue are donated once the tournament is complete. After the 2009 Open Championships, Habitat for Humanity had more than 200 volunteers help to dismantle the venue and was able to use the materials to construct two homes for families in need.
  • USBC hires between 50 and 75 people locally to help operate the tournament.
  • A hosting community can expect to realize a local economic boost of approximately $40 million during the course of the tournament.
  • Approximately 60,000 people (bowlers, friends and family members) will visit the host city during the run of the tournament.
  • Bowlers from all 50 states compete in the event annually. Several foreign countries also take to the tournament lanes every year. Past eventa included bowlers from such countries as Bermuda, Canada, United Kingdom and the Dominican Republic.
